How to Make the Ultimate Vegan Green Goddess Dressing

Mar 22, 2019

Green goddess dressing is a garlic and herb, mayo-based dip that is literally the epitome of healthy salad dressings! While it uses mayo as a base (and is flavored with herbs and garlic) like Ranch dressing, green goddess dressing is much stronger and more flavorful thanks to the addition of fresh herbs and a tang of lemon juice. Complement that with some cool, creamy yogurt, and you’ve got yourself the adult version of a go-to dip for fresh veggies, salads, or a power bowl! Here’s our favorite Vegan Green Goddess Dressing recipe – it’s the perfect addition to any healthy meal prep dish.

Green Goddess Dressing Recipe

Fun fact: Green goddess dressing was supposedly created in San Francisco in the 1920s to honor George Arliss after the opening of the hit play “The Green Goddess.” It disappeared for a while until it became incredibly popular once again in the ‘70s and ‘80s; especially in Southern California. Green goddess dressing was cast as a healthy option and was beloved amongst the health food circle before it became mainstream.

There have been various renditions of the dressing over the years using different herbs and flavorings, though most of them stick with a sour cream/mayo base and a trio of fresh herbs for flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • ⅓ cup chopped fresh parsley
  • ⅓ cup chopped fresh tarragon
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh chives
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, or more to taste
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1-2 teaspoons Green Goddess Seasoning

Directions:

  1. Blend the herbs and garlic: Stop the blender and scrape down the sides. Add the parsley, chives, tarragon, and garlic. Blend until smooth and vibrant green.
  2. Add the sour cream and mayonnaise to a blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Taste the dressing for seasoning. Add additional salt if desired.
  4. Serve as a dip for crudité or as a dressing for salads.

How to use it: This dressing makes for a great addition to your meal prep routine, as it can last up to a week in the fridge. We love it as a salad dressing for our favorite healthy salads, and as a light addition to a quinoa-based or protein power bowl. You can also use it as a dip for vegetables or spread atop crudités or as a marinade for chicken or shrimp. Toss it with some pasta or potato salad, or drizzle some on a homemade flatbread/pizza for an extra kick. The finished dressing is quite thick, so be sure to toss your greens in the dressing rather than pour the dressing on top of your greens – it can be hard to mix afterwards.
